The Scourge of the $9.99 Subscriptions Slowly Eating Your Bank Account

It starts innocently enough.

$9.99 a month.

Hardly worth worrying about.

That’s how they get you.

Because somewhere inside your bank account, $9.99 has been breeding.

It invited $7.99 over. Then $12.99 moved into the spare room. Before long, a mysterious $5.99 charge you don’t remember subscribing to has apparently been living in the basement since 2023.

Welcome to the subscription economy.

When Did We Start Renting Everything?

Once upon a time, subscriptions meant newspapers, magazines, and perhaps cable television.

Now we subscribe to everything.

Netflix. Amazon Prime. Spotify. Disney+. Cloud storage. Microsoft 365. Audible. Gaming. Food delivery. Fitness apps. Dating apps. VPNs. News sites. AI tools.

Individually, many are excellent value.

The problem is that they travel in packs.

Current US prices illustrate how quickly things accumulate. Netflix starts at $8.99 a month, Prime Video can be bought standalone for $8.99, Paramount+ starts at $8.99, while Apple TV+ is $12.99.

Four services. Nothing particularly extravagant.

And we’re already approaching $40 every month.

The Subscription You Don’t Know You Have

Here’s where it gets interesting.

A 2026 US survey found that 59.9% of respondents had at least one paid subscription going unused, with an average of 2.6 unused subscriptions among those surveyed. The average value being wasted was $26.79 per month.

That’s over $320 a year disappearing in exchange for absolutely nothing.

And then there’s the free trial.

Ah, the free trial.

“Try it free for 30 days. Cancel anytime!”

Of course you’ll cancel.

You make a mental note.

Unfortunately, your mental note has been filed alongside clean behind the refrigerator and learn Italian.

The same survey found 70% had forgotten to cancel a free trial at some point and subsequently found themselves paying for it.

Midway Challenge: Find the Mystery Charge

Here’s something worth doing today.

Open your bank or credit-card statement and look for every recurring payment.

Not just Netflix and Amazon.

Look for the weird ones.

SUPER DIGITAL PRO — $6.99

What’s Super Digital Pro?

Nobody knows.

You vaguely remember converting a PDF in 2022.

You’ve now paid them $300.

If you find one, tell me in the comments. What’s the strangest subscription you’ve discovered you were still paying for?

Why $9.99 Is So Clever

The genius of subscription pricing is that each individual payment looks harmless.

Ten dollars?

That’s nothing.

But ten $10 subscriptions become $100 a month.

That’s $1,200 a year.

Over ten years, assuming prices never increase, that’s $12,000.

Suddenly those tiny monthly charges have stopped nibbling and started ordering dessert.

Research has also found that consumers can dramatically underestimate their total subscription spending. One study found people initially estimated $86 a month, but itemising their subscriptions produced an average of $219.

Tonight, Go Subscription Hunting

I’m certainly not suggesting cancelling everything.

If you watch Netflix every night, enjoy it.

If Spotify follows you everywhere, keep it.

If a subscription saves time, entertains you, educates you, or helps you earn money, it may be worth every cent.

Cancel the zombies.

The services quietly taking money despite you having forgotten they exist.

So tonight, investigate your bank statement.

Somewhere in there, a $9.99 subscription may be hoping you don’t notice it.

Find it.

Cancel it.

And enjoy the deeply satisfying knowledge that next month…

$9.99 isn’t getting away quite so easily.

If you enjoyed this post, share it with someone whose bank account could use a subscription exterminator.
