Life Hack Alert: Success Isn’t About Luck, It’s About Systems

We all use systems to function. The ritual of getting up in the morning, getting ready, going to work and then working throughout the day is a system that you created. You will repeat this system over and over.

But, what if we could create a system to get everything we want in life?. Maybe, you think your current system will do this, perhaps it will, but for many people it falls well short. Here’s why.

Most systems used in everyday life are designed to just keep the wolf away from the door. They pay the bills and maybe pay for a few luxuries, perhaps the mortgage, but there is a huge difference between thriving and just surviving.

Building Your System for Success

When you look at successful people, entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, they’re not winging it. They’ve got systems in place to maximize their time, energy, and resources. You can do the same.

What is the difference between a system and a goal?

That’s a good question: A goal is your end game, this is what you want to achieve. A system is the way to achieve it. You may need a different system for each goal or one system may eventually take care of all of your goals. For Example

A financial system may not only take care of your financial worries, it could also take care of some of your personal worries and health issues brought on by stress, lack of funds and even overwork. Not having to worry about money can solve a multitude of problems.

So, how do you create a system that works? Here’s a step-by-step process:

1. Define Your Big Picture

What does success look like to you? Is it financial freedom? Better health? Building a business? Write it down so you have a clear vision.

2. Break It Into Smaller Components

Once you have your big picture, reverse engineer it into manageable steps.

Reverse engineering is the process of taking something apart to understand how it works so you can replicate, improve, or modify it. It’s like working backward from the finished product to figure out its design, structure, or functionality.

Let’s say you want to build a successful blog. Your system might include:

  • Writing one article per week.
  • Spending 30 minutes daily on SEO research.
  • Promoting posts on social media three times a week.

3. Establish Habits and Rituals

Consistency is the backbone of any system. Turn your steps into daily or weekly habits. For example, if you’re saving money, build a habit of reviewing your budget every Sunday.

4. Measure and Adjust

No system is perfect right out of the gate. Track your progress and tweak your system as needed. If something’s not working, adjust until it does.

5. Automate When Possible

The less mental effort your system requires, the better. Use tools, apps, or automation to handle repetitive tasks, like scheduling social media posts or setting up bill payments.

Systems for Life Success

Let’s take a look at some specific areas of life and how systems can make a difference:

  1. Finances: Create a system for budgeting, saving, and investing. For example, the 50/30/20 rule (50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings) is a great financial system.
  2. Health: Build a system for meal prepping, exercising, and tracking your sleep. A simple rule like “work out three times a week” can go a long way.
  3. Career: Have a system for networking, skill-building, and tracking your professional growth. Setting aside one hour a week to learn something new can keep you ahead of the curve.
  4. Relationships: Build habits around nurturing your connections, like scheduling weekly check-ins with loved ones or blocking out time for date nights.

The most important thing is to stick with it. You have probably been sticking with the system you already have for years, this indicates that you can stick at something. Your current system has got you to where you are now. If where you are now needs improvement, be prepared to do things differently if you want to grow and improve.

Always be learning. Your value to the marketplace depends on how easy you are to replace. Increase your value by making yourself more valuable. Create daily systems around learning, becoming more healthier, improving existing relationship and creating new ones.

Life doesn’t have to be an endless struggle. Set new goals regularly and create systems to achieve them. When you are always creating new things to look forward to, life will always be interesting, when you think “that’s it” and aren’t looking for ways to improve your life, life will be dull, repetitive and boring and you will most likely feel “stuck”.
