For most people, life feels like a grind. You work hard, you push, you hustle, and maybe, just maybe, you get a scrap of what you were chasing. But what if I told you there was a man who claimed reality itself bends to your assumptions? A man who believed your imagination isn’t just fantasy, it’s the creative force of the universe.
Meet Neville Goddard.
Born in Barbados in 1905, Neville didn’t appear to be a mystic. He came to New York to be a dancer and lived a fairly ordinary life until he met a mysterious Ethiopian teacher named Abdullah. That’s when everything changed.
Abdullah taught Neville that the Bible isn’t a dusty book of history. It’s a psychological blueprint. Every story, every character, is about you. And its central message? Your imagination creates reality.
That became Neville’s life’s work: to teach the Law of Assumption.
Now, let’s be clear. The Law of Assumption is not the “law of attraction” you’ve been sold in glossy self-help books. It’s not about making vision boards and hoping the universe delivers. Neville went further. He said:
- Assume the feeling of your wish fulfilled.
- Live in the end result in your imagination until it feels natural.
- Persist until your outer world mirrors your inner state.
Simple. Radical. Uncomfortable.
And here’s the kicker: it worked.
Neville told story after story of ordinary people applying this law with extraordinary results.
Let’s take a look at his own life. He longed to visit his family in Barbados, but was broke. Abdullah told him, “You are already in Barbados.” Neville thought he was mad. But he followed the instruction; he imagined himself there, night after night. Soon, he received unexpected money and a free boat ticket.
Or consider his discharge from the Army during World War II. Neville wanted out. Instead of begging or worrying, he imagined the end, himself home, free. Within weeks, against the odds, he was released.
One woman who attended his lectures desperately wanted an apartment in New York. Everyone told her it was impossible. Neville told her to imagine turning the key and walking inside. She persisted, and not long after, she landed the exact apartment she’d been told she couldn’t have.
Coincidence? Neville would laugh at the word.
His point was brutally simple: you don’t get what you want. You get what you assume.
And that’s where most of us go wrong. We spend our days saying things like “I never catch a break,” “Money is always tight,” or “Nothing ever works out for me.” And then, like clockwork, life proves us right.
Neville called this “hardened assumption.” False beliefs, repeated and felt as if true, eventually solidify into fact. Which means if you’ve been living the same old struggle for years, chances are you’ve been unconsciously assuming it into existence.
So how do you flip the script?
Neville’s advice was practical. Define what you want. Entering a relaxed state just before sleep works best. Imagine the end result. Not the process. Not the struggle. The end. Feel it as real. Persist until it feels natural. Then let the world do what it must.
“Dare to believe in the reality of your assumption,” Neville said, “and watch the world play its part relative to its fulfillment.”
Some find this terrifying. Because if Neville is right, then you are responsible, not fate, not luck, not chance. You.
But that’s also the most liberating truth you’ll ever hear.
Neville died in 1972, but his teachings are resurfacing. His followers report jaw-dropping results to this day, businesses created, relationships restored, wealth and health manifested.
The real question is: what assumptions are you carrying right now? Whether you realise it or not, they’re scripting your future.
So tonight, instead of worrying yourself to sleep, try something different. Close your eyes. Imagine the life you want. Assume it’s already yours.
Who knows? You might just discover what Neville Goddard knew all along: imagination creates your reality.
