Most people go through life on a wing and a prayer.
They wait weeks, months, sometimes years, hoping something might happen. They wait like passengers stranded in a cosmic waiting room where the receptionist has stepped out to lunch. If that sounds familiar, I need you to pay close attention. Because Florence Scovel Shinn, one of the boldest spiritual teachers of the last century, revealed something different. She said it isn’t about begging or pleading. It’s about commanding. And when you learn to command, the universe has no choice but to respond.

That sounds audacious, doesn’t it? But think about how you’ve been taught. From an early age, we’re told to ask nicely, to say ‘please,’ and to hope that someone in power will grant us what we need. That conditioning runs deep, so we end up approaching the universe like nervous children asking for dessert. “Please, Universe, if it’s not too much trouble… maybe could I have just a little?” That’s not faith. That’s hesitation dressed up as spirituality.
A Game of Boomerangs
Shinn turned that entire mindset on its head. She wrote, “The game of life is a game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later with astounding accuracy.” Notice what she didn’t say. She didn’t say “our prayers, if polite enough, will eventually be considered.” She said our words return to us. That’s a law, not a wish list.
And here’s the secret: timing matters. Those last moments before sleep, when your conscious mind is winding down and your subconscious is wide open, are the perfect time to plant new instructions. Most people waste this golden moment. They scroll their phones, they replay the day’s arguments, they fall asleep to the hum of anxiety. That’s like handing your subconscious a script that says, “Please rehearse my stress all night long.” Then they wonder why the next morning feels heavy before it even begins.
Florence Shinn taught that if you deliberately plant the right words before sleep, your subconscious will accept them as commands. Not requests. Not wishful thinking. Commands. Spoken with gratitude, belief, and conviction, these words bypass the doubting conscious mind and begin to rearrange reality at its root.
Your Word Is Your Wand
Let’s make this practical. Imagine two different bedtime prayers. The first goes like this: “Please, Universe, help me find a way to pay these bills. I don’t know what to do.” Sounds humble. Sounds reasonable. However, it actually reinforces a lack. Now imagine this instead: “Infinite Spirit, I now command my perfect supply to appear. I give thanks it is already done.” The second one carries authority. It doesn’t plead. It declares. Feel the difference?
Shinn often reminded her students, “Your word is your wand. The words you speak create your destiny.” And that wand is most powerful when you wave it right before drifting off to sleep.
But let’s be clear. This isn’t about arrogance. It’s not about barking orders at the sky. It’s about aligning with divine law, which has always been about abundance, wholeness, and guidance. You’re not inventing miracles. You’re claiming what already belongs to you.
It’s All About Alignment
I once knew someone who tried this exact practice for thirty days. Every night, she declared with conviction, “Tomorrow, I see opportunity. Tomorrow, money flows easily. Tomorrow, I act with confidence.” She went to bed speaking as though it were already so. Within weeks, things started shifting. Random checks in the mail. Unexpected job leads. Even though her mood had transformed, she woke up lighter, more certain, more aligned.
Skeptical? That’s natural. Your logical mind will always try to wrestle control. But as Shinn wrote, “There is a supply for every demand.” The problem isn’t the universe running short. The problem is that we place weak orders, half-hearted requests, or no orders at all.
So tonight, I dare you to try it. Turn off the distractions, breathe deeply, and choose three things you’re genuinely grateful for. Feel them. Then, speak a command. Make it specific. Make it bold. “I now command perfect health in my body.” “I now command financial increase to manifest with ease.” “I now command clarity in my next step.” Say it out loud. Then let it go. Sleep like someone who has already placed their order and knows the kitchen is working on it.
You’ll notice subtle shifts first — better sleep, calmer mornings, random synchronicities. Then, bigger movements: opportunities arise, people reach out, and forgotten resources come to light. That’s not a coincidence. That’s the law. Florence Scovel Shinn said it best: “Nothing stands between man and his highest ideals and every desire of his heart, but doubt and fear. When man can wish without worrying, every desire will be instantly fulfilled.”
It’s not about begging for scraps. It’s about commanding your share of infinite supply. And when you do, the universe doesn’t hesitate. It answers. Every single time.
So the question is simple: what will you command tonight?
