In 2004 I decided I wanted to make money from home. I had just come back from a great holiday in Florida. Whilst I was out there I decided I was not going to work for anyone again and come what may, whatever it takes I was going to start my own online business.

Yes, I had commitments. At the time I didn’t own a house but I had rent and all that other stuff that we have to pay for each month.

My first tip for you if you are new to starting a business is to pick something you will do happily. I chose selling on eBay as my first online business. This was a no brainer for me as I loved buying stuff from eBay.

I didn’t have a great deal of money. I sold my personal development book collection. I had collected books from an early age. It was now time to let them go to a new home. I listed them on eBay as one big massive package and sold the lot for around £250.

I took that £250 and invested in two large boxes of diet pills. Diet pills were a big seller back in early 2004, as people were looking for an easy way out to lose weight. I went all in, invested the lot, listed the pills on eBay. I did a special deal of buy 5 get 1 free and created a nice looking ad.

Do your research, look at what’s selling, people want all kinds of stuff and shop for it like crazy online.

So, was this diet pill business of mine a success?

Yes, it was. I was awarded Gold Powerseller status from eBay in March of 2004, back then it meant selling around $6000 worth of product in a month, I believe the requirements are much different today.

I was making around £800 a week profit after Paypal and eBay fees. I maintained that for nearly three years. That business went on to make over a £100k and started with just £250. Just a simple idea, selling  Diet pills. But this is the amazing thing about working from home online. It can be Diet Pills, books, digital how to products, cat mugs, T Shirts, anything. People love to shop online.

With the Great Pandemic of 2020 it became even more important to start your work from home business online. Online sales tripled. It will never go back to normal, many people will continue to buy and buy online. It’s convenient and often cheaper than buying in a shop.

Also, many things are not found in shops. Many digital solutions to people’s problems are found by searching the Internet. If you look on Amazon, books solving problems (money, acne, health, beauty, relationship problems etc) sell in their droves. People love quick answers to problems (diet pills etc).

How To Make Money From Home – What You Need To Know To Get Started

If you have a job, keep it. don’t do what I did and quit your job. I was lucky, when I get an idea in my head I keep going till it works, but not everyone is like that. Also, if you have a family that depends on you, you will still need the cash coming in.

Instead. Work your business part time. Start with a business you feel comfortable with, but don’t get caught up in trying to monetise your passion. Many self help Guru’s go on and on about this but if you’re passionate about origami it doesn’t mean you will make a successful business from it.

I wasn’t passionate about diet pills or losing weight when I started my eBay business. I was passionate about making money. This is really all you need to be. Be passionate about making money, lose the employee mindset if you have one, create a business selling to satisfy people’s wants by solving their problems.

How To Make Money From Home – Don’t Overcomplicate It

Making money from home isn’t easy but it can be simple. Don’t overcomplicate it. Find a product that people want, get traffic or sell on a platform that already has it (eBay, Amazon, Etsy etc). If you’re selling digital products, there are many good platforms online to sell from ( Amazon, Clickbank, Warriorplus there are literally hundreds of different digital platforms you can sell on.

If you want to sell on your own e commerce site, you can get everything you need from Shopify . There is no shortage of tutorials online on how to start your own online business. You can find lots of free tutorials on YouTube.
